Day 1: Sofia - Milano /12.08.2006/

Although the weather forecast is not as good as we want it to be, early in the morning we load all our equipment in the car and head towards Western Europe. Our plan is to climb some beautiful peaks higher than 4000m in the Italian and Swiss Alps.

About midnight, after a long day of driving, we stop for a nap 100km before Milano...

Day 2: Milano – Cervinia – Gressoney – Tschaval (1825m) - Passo Salati (2936m) - Punta Indren (3260m) /13.08.2006/

In the morning we continue towards our first goal – the Italian resort Breuil-Cervinia (2000m), which is the starting point for climbing the Italian ridge (Liongrat) of Matterhorn (Monte Cervino) (4478m). The weather is awful - fog, wind and drizzle. The mountain guides tell us that after the major stonefall 20 days ago and the fresh snow the route is now impossible to climb. Since the weather forecast for the next week is quite disasterous we decide to give up. The only sunny day for the week is to be Tuesday and that's why we decide to resort to plan "B" - Monte Rosa massif (4634m), the second highest mountain in the Alps after Mont Blanc (4810m).

The starting point is the village of Tschaval (1825m) in the end of the Gressoney valley. Because of the bad weather we take the lift up the mountain to Passo Salati (2936m) and after a walk in the fog and snow we pitch our tent beside Punta Indren (3260m).

Day 3: Punta Indren (3260m) – Rif. Gnifetti (3647m) – 4015m – Rif. Gnifetti (3647m) /14.08.2006/

In the morning the weather is clear and we take the trail to Rif. Gnifetti (3647m) traversing a glacier to a stone wall with fixed ropes and then another glacier. We reach the hut by noon. Our frend is tired, so we decide to take an aclimatization walk up the glacier. About 17h we are at 4015m, but we want to save our strength for the next day's climb, the snowy ridge of Lyskamm (4527m), we head back.

In the evening we sort our equipment and go to bed early. But about midnight the condition of our friend gets worse...

After a sleepless night, "pulmonary oedema" diagnosis, a tablet of Diamox and the effective cooperation of the man in the hut early in the morning our friend is evacuated with helicopter to Aosta - the biggest city in the region. We don't have a choice but to go down with the rest of our things.

The forecast is correct - the weather is perfect and at daybreak we see about 50 people heading up the glacier.

After we take our companion from the hospital we decide to spend the night in the valley and see how he is doing. The decision is made - we are going back to Bulgaria...

Day 6: Serbia - Sofia /17.08.2006/

Emo makes a new personal long driving record (23 hours non-stop) and in the morning we are home. We decide to make our plans after some sleep!

About noon we agree on the next destination - Turkey. With a little help from our friends we gather all available information and buy bus tickets for the next morning.

Day 7: Sofia - Istanbul /18.08.2006/

After a long day we finally arrive in Istanbul in the evening. We buy tickets for Kayseri - the starting point for climbing Mount Erciyes (3917m).

Day 8: Istanbul – Kayseri – Erciyes Kayak Merkezi (2200m) - camp 2800m /19.08.2006/

The travel to Kayseri takes us 12 hours. From the city we take a small bus to the ski center Erciyes Kayak Merkezi (2200м), which is half way along the road to the city of Develi.

The weather forecast is favourable, except for late afternoon thunderstorms, so we take a lift up to 2700m and after a short walk pitch our tent on a small meadow in the foot of the summit's East ridge on 2800m.

Day 9: camp 2800m - Erciyes (3917m, up to 3910m) – Erciyes Kayak Merkezi (2200m) - Kayseri – Nigde /20.08.2006/

The morning is clear and cool. For the climb we have chosen the picturesque and easy East ridge, which is longer, but more panoramic. After some minor peaks on the ridge and a traverse on the right side of a huge rock pile (the so called "Camel hump") we reach the lower summit of Erciyes. The Western summit is about 50 meters higher, but the final 6 meters, graded IV UIAA, are on extremely loose rock, so we decide not to climb it without a rope.

For the way down the Turkish of mountaineers group we met on the summit chooses a short scree route, but we decide to take the same way back along the East ridge. We reach our tent by noon, pack our things and hike down to the ski center. Two of our new friends give us a lift to the bus station in Kayseri and we take a bus to the nearby city of Nigde, from which we plan to reach the next mountain in our trip - Aladaglar.

Day 10: Nigde – Demirkazik village (1700m) – camp 3000m /21.08.2006/

At 7h in the morning we take the first bus to Çamardi, which leaves us 4km away from the village of Demirkazik. For the first time we see our goal - the summit of Demirkazik (3756m). After about an hour's walk we reach the village and gather some more information in the mountain house Dag ve Kayak Evi situated in its upper part.

We choose a beautiful route through the right kanyon of Çimbar vadisi. The last water on the way up is bout an hour after the end of the kanyon at 2600m. The trail continues along a dry valley and we decide to put up our camp at 3000m, just beneath the 600m summit's East wall. The view is incredible!

Day 11: camp 3000m - Demirkazik (3756m) - camp 3000m /22.08.2006/

We wake up just in time to see the summit burning in the sunset! The way up goes through steep scree up to a col on 3350m, then on the ridge - first scree and then 300 vertical meters II-III UIAA graded rock ridge, which is very exposed and frequently very loose. On the hardest sections there is some pitons (about 6-7), but not enough for protecting the whole climb.

We reach the summit 3h after we left the tent. The weather is perfect and the view is breathtaking! We see Erciyes in the distance. After some pictures we go down the same route. The descend takes us 1 hour more than the ascend. The downclimb is not so difficult, but the thought that every mistake will be last makes us to be very concentrated!

Luckily we find some leaking water on the screes below the col and fill our bottles - we will spend one more night in our camp!

In the morning we take a short walk to the north side of Demirkazik and with respect make some photos of the 700m north wall. After packing our camp we trek down the village taking the left longer route, because the kanyon is not so good for descending with heavy backpacks. Early morning we reach again Nigde and start the cultural part of our journey - we head to the region of Kapadokya with its underground cities and rock churches and dwellings.

First we take a walk in the biggest underground city in the village of Kaymakli. The upper four floors of the city are opened for visitors. The feeling to be 20-30m under the ground is very interesting!

After Kaymakli we continue our trip to Göreme, the tourist center of Kapadokya, which is situated 11km from the major city in the region - Nevsehir. There we take a room in a rock hostel and in the afternoon visit the Open air museum with interesting churches in the rock pinacles.

Currency

The currency in Turkey is the new turkish lira (Yeni Türk Lirasi, YTL). The exchange rate in August 2006 was about 1.84 YTL for 1 EUR. After 1 january 2005 6 zeros were removed from the old turkish lira. There is a possibility to pay in EUR in the bigger resorts or when you buy bus tickets.

Local time zone

The local time in whole Turkey is +2 GMT.

Electricity

Electricity in Turkey is 230V / 50Hz (same as in Europe), as well as the wall-plug are compatible.
more about electricity standards all over the world

Internet

In the cities and resorts there are some internet clubs.

Maps and guidebooks

All available maps for Turkish mountains we found are made by hand. The guidebook of Lonely Planet for Turkey (2005)contains information only about cultural landmarks and almost nothing about the mountains.

Here we present some useful maps:

map of Erciyes
map of Aladaglar / Demirkazik
map of Kapadokya
map of Göreme city

Equipment

The equipment required is like for a summer mountain below 4000m. Here are some major elements with some comments:

• Harness and 50-60m dynamic rope (for the final 7 meters on Erciyes and for climbing Demirkazik)
• Walking poles (useful for the scree)
• Sun glasses
• Tent
• Matress
• Summer sleeping bag
• primus-stove, pot (at least 1l)
• Water bottles (at least for 3l)
• Headlamp

Don't forget to take light summer clothes, in the cities it's very hot!

For more information about the necessary equipment you can send us e-mail.

Transport, routes

Bus transport is very well developed, there are a lot of destinations for every part of Turkey from every major city and resort.

Erciyes (3917m)

Aladaglar (Аладалар), Demirkazik (3756m)

Kapadokya

Istanbul

Expenses

Language

Short dictionary
